What is Spam in Email Marketing?

I love email marketing.  Any business that can use this effectively probably feels the same.  It is a simple way to make personal relationships and to keep in touch.  However, there are several potential customers who receive emails and begin to notice it is spam.  If you are getting flagged, make sure that you re-look the way you are approaching your direct marketing approach.

One story before I describe spam.  There are certain things that are picked up as spam that aren’t.  There was a time when I was writing my dad a letter to his office to tell him something.  We had written back and forth on the same email several times.  Because of this, there were a few links to my website.  He happened to have his spam filter on high, which meant that my letter actually bounced back to me and never went through.  This situation – most likely not spam.

So, what is spam?  There are actually two levels.  If you have someone who says yes – send me your information – through an opt – in, then it isn’t spam.  If you have someone who has expressed interest but hasn’t signed up – still not spam.  You can send them an email.  If you have someone who has directly avoided trying to get your letters, then you have a spam problem.  Don’t send your information to someone who doesn’t want it.

Of course, there are pre-cautionary measures you can take to avoid spam.  For instance, having an opt – out of your newsletter guarantees professionalism and legitimacy. Not having too many links also can stop problems from picking up with automated systems.  And, sending good old information, not just ads (unless that is what your customers sign up for), definitely eliminates the spam idea.

Unfortunately, email marketing and spam still haven’t been standardized or refined.  If you are an online business, make sure that you are being respectful and not stepping over the line.  That will help you to eliminate all problems with the world of spam and being red flagged for an accidental push of the send button.

First Steps to Website Development

Almost every business is hearing this… “You need a website.”  Of course, this is true.  But, that doesn’t mean everyone is a specialist in building a website or knows what the development portion is when getting into a website.  You want to make sure that you know how to begin the process and what this will mean to the programmers you are working with.

Before you even begin with website development, you need a home.  This is like your virtual office – the place where everyone goes to see who you are and what you do.  To get a home, you will need to get a domain name, or a URL.  The URL will tell people where to go, as well as the theme or idea of your business.  You will then need someone to host this, such as through a hosting company.

After you have planned your foundation, you will want to consider the basics of programming.  There are several ways you can build a site, either through heavy programming, such as .ASP, or through content management systems, such as Joomla.  If you want to manage the website yourself, then using a CMS with the website development is more effective.  However, if you want continuous help, then the heavier programming can offer more options.

After this, you will need to think of the designs for the website development.  You will want to put in concepts about the look, feel and navigation of your website.  By doing this, you will easily be able to work toward more solutions for getting the look and feel of your website while providing a complete business signature about who you are.

The website development that you use for your business should be prepared through basic steps.  By doing this, you will easily be able to work toward significant solutions and alternatives that allow you to build the right type of business presence.

Must Have Modules for Website Design

Yes, it is true among businesses.  Deciding on modules and whether they are important is questionable.   Modules are the “extras” that you put into your website, such as the frames on the side and the extra information on the bottom.  There are hundreds of modules that you can have; however, when planning for your first design, you will want to focus on the most important.  Following are my recommendations.

  1. Sign up for… Newsletter, emails, etc.  Make sure that everyone finds a way to keep in touch with you.  If not, you are losing a lot of traffic that could potentially work in your favor for anything that you need.  Having an opt-in of any kind will help you to get traffic and to remain noticed.
  2. Contact Us.  There are many who focus on one contact us form on a separate page, which is now expected.  Others combine this with an immediate contact form on every page.  You can also have a live chat for the modules that you are using. Any way you decide to do it, make sure that your website design has a way to contact you – if not several.  Otherwise, you will always be a business without customers.
  3. Feedback.  Everything is going toward user generated and opinionated options.  Your feedback doesn’t have to be comments.  Liking you on Facebook, following your Tweets and any other way to make sure that customers begin to interact with you through your website and business works as a secondary means to keep in touch.

The website design that you incorporate is one that should be based on keeping in touch.  Whether you are informative or e-commerce, you want to make sure that you invite others to see your business and what you do.  By doing this, you will easily be able to work toward getting better results and having several calls to action in your website design for potential customers.

The Black Hat of Search Engine Optimization

Even though there are terms that have been around for years on the Internet, many overlook the basics.  One is the black hat techniques that are often used for search engine optimization and what this causes.  Before you decide to optimize, make sure that you understand if you are black hatting.  If you are, you can be banned from search engines and will lose all your efforts.

  1. Too many keywords.  I’m sure many of you remember looking at websites and seeing the continuous keywords without any content or substance.  Yes, this is frustrating to most, but the websites are actually making money by doing this… until they get caught.  Always think quality not quantity.  If you have too many keywords without substance, you get the boot from the search engines.
  2. Too many submissions.  Black hat options will often focus on submitting to the same search engine several times, making their listing appear over and over again.  Eventually, you will get unindexed.  Don’t list your website more than once.  The search engines will pick it up, categorize it and will let you know that you are listed.  Give it time and you will move into higher rankings instead of being unlisted.
  3. Too many links.  Believe it or not, not all links are good links.  I know a lot of people who want to short cut link building with automated options and by paying $5 for 1000 links.  Unfortunately, you are either not going to get listed by the directories because it is an automated system and not human or the search engines will see illegitimate links.  Take the time to build your links the right way.  Even if you have an automated system, there are ways to use the correct ones for the right listings.
There is often a thin line with black hat and search engine optimization.  However, you always want to make sure you stay on the white hat side.  Watching your quantity and quality and making sure that you work toward better listings ensures a better response from the search engines.

Why Article Marketing Works

I began article marketing over six years ago, finding different clients and entrepreneurs that needed to build an online presence.  At that time, I was writing continuously without knowing who I was writing for, where the information was going or what the links at the end meant.  Of course, I’ve gone through a huge learning curve since then.  A part of this learning curve was realizing how effective article marketing is.

The benefits that I noted from article marketing came by accident.  I believe that I was looking up information about a topic that was fairly popular – probably something with the health industry.  As I was browsing, I ran into a few articles with information and a link to a site.  I began reading and realized – they were my articles.

This has happened more than once with the article marketing that I have done.  The amazing thing is that the articles are usually five to six years old and are showing up on the top of the search engines with links back to the customer site.  For those customers, they have a static presence on the article directories that links back to what they are doing and working toward a better presence for their needs.

In case you were wondering, article marketing works.  Once you put an article on the web, it points to specific information and keywords.  After this, it links back to your site.  This isn’t temporary, moving or scrolling.  As long as you keep going with your business, your article will stay as a simple and effective means for building your Internet presence.

Web Site Design and How to Use It

Web site design is one of the aspects that marketers often overlook, leaving it to the creativity of programmers to work with the right framework.  However, I believe in the concept of building from the vision.  This means that you will want to first think of end results, than start building your web site design.

Defining Building the Vision

Every business has a unique presence, as well as unique goals.  More important, those who are building a business presence are probably looking for a professional and unique look that is attractive and gets end results as customers.  You want to think about what your end goals are – how you want to attract customers, what you want your presence to look like and how this will be appealing.  This will lay out the blue print for the web site design that you create.

Beginning Your Creation

Before you work with service providers for web site design, make sure that you take your vision and turn it into something tangible.  For instance, if you want an information site, figure out the modules and different areas where you can add in information in different ways.  If you want to build a customer list or sell different items, then make sure that you list this as well.

Web Site Design

The web site design should be the end creation of the blue print you have created.  You want to make sure that you work with web programmers in an understanding of getting results with marketing and customers.  This will help to lay out an attractive platform for those interested in your business and which want to look at your presence from a different viewpoint.

By planning your vision first, the web site design will become simpler and easier to use.  The more that you plan and understand which modules to use, the more that you will know exactly which direction to take when laying out the framework for your business presence.
